Having read most of Archers books, i have found that he has lost his touch a bit. When I think of when Kane and Abel came out and his earlier stuff. The Clifton chronicles is very similar formula to some of this later works. On the plus …

I used to enjoy Archer’s books…but he repeats himself a lot. Foreign Office — check, a few MPs — check, affluent people — check, a few bad guys — check.
Loved the first two in this series, liked the third, couldn’t get interested in this. Unfortunately, the storyline became formulaic, and the characters uninteresting for me. Too bad.

I could wait to read this book and even though it was well written and lots of action I was disappointed. Having stated that I will continue reading the series.
I have enjoyed Archer's work in the past, but I am finding this series slow and more of a soap opera then I like. I think he has done this type of historical family fiction better in other novels.

As a reviewer it is my responsibility not to divulge any of the plots of books I review. This is kind of hard to do with Jeffrey Archer's novels, in particular, the books in the Clifton Chronicles.
