On McCourt's first day as a teacher, a fight broke out--which ended when a student tossed a sandwich in anger. McCourt picked up the sandwich and ate it. For the next three decades, his calm demeanor and stories of difficult childhood in Ireland helped him connect with his students. He grew as a teacher and as a person, developing new techniques to educate his students. But he also became disillusioned with public-school bureaucracy, and what he has to say about it will enlighten everyone.

Feb 15, 2014.....I have just finished Disc 3 of the audio book, and I am enchanted. I have noticed that there is a copy of the book at my home library, so I will be grabbing that to read along to as I listen. The audio book is read by Frank McCourt himself, and I highly recommend that readers listen to at least one of these discs, before reading the book, as his accent and mimicry, and overall acting out of his story are priceless.....I notice that there is only an audio cassette version of his other memoir "Tis," and I will be digging out my cassette player to listen to that!

Frank McCourt is a genius at writing and describes his personal life well in his own voice. One of the best Audio CD's I've ever listened to.

McCort's description of his years teaching in New York City's public schools. Spoken/read by the author hmself in his wonderful accent. Loved listening to him tell his story.
