This is the 9th book in Harper's series, the "Elizabeth I mysteries". Mary Queen of Scots is just a "guest" of the English queen in the late summer of 1569, but rumors of a rebellion to overthrow Elizabeth and crown Mary queen of the English are sweeping the North. The murder (by crossbow) of one of her attendants forces Elizabeth to begin a dangerous "progress" in the hope of bringing her enemy out of the shadows. Harper's research on 16th century English life and her depiction of a royal progress are fascinating. Fans of the series will find the queen's trusted servants - Meg, Ned, and Jenks - her "privy council" when she's on a murderer's trail, joined by sea captain Francis Drake in this volume. Is the "Hooded Hawke" out to murder Elizabeth, or Drake?
