Not one of Amis's finest. It suffers more than most of his novels from the fact that all of Amis's narrators seem to speak in the voice (and exquisite vocabulary) of ... Martin Amis. This is fine when the narrator is a writer, but less so when he is supposed to be a Russian emigre.
