Who doesn’t remember Calvin, that irrepressible six-year-old scamp first shown to us in Sunday morning newspaper comics? Well, he was well known to the 80s generation, who chuckled at his antics and nodded at the exasperation of his kindly but hopelessly stressed parents.

Calvin is blessed (cursed?) with a vivid imagination, one that has him turning into various animals, a spaceman, explorer, balloonist and sportsman, among other things. He’s lazy, selfish, vandalistic and opinionated. He’s every teacher’s nightmare and the bane of small girls. He was the precursor of the criminalistics Bart Simpson and the antidote to the bland, fretful, do-gooding Charlie Brown.

In this anthology, Calvin’s adventures revolve around his obsession with his stuffed tiger Hobbes. He acts as though Hobbes is alive, thinking and capable of mischief. When things go wrong, he blames Hobbes. When he wants to play, he plays with Hobbes. Unlike the aforementioned Bart and Charlie, Calvin seems to have no human friends at all but he’s at the age where he doesn’t notice, mind or care. Hobbes is good enough for him and, when we see the world through Calvin’s eyes, he’s quite enough for us, too.

Whether you’ve read about C&H before now or this is your first time, flip through this anthology of comics and muse about whether Calvin is like your own kids. (If you don’t have children but want them, consider this book fair warning.)
