Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.

Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl--a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate.

Gillian Shields's electrifying tale will dazzle readers with suspense, mysticism, and romance.

I really liked this book! The dilemma with loving Sebastian and what he will become seemed like a better way to create drama in a story. Versus just plain drama where a girl or boy is suspecting cheating or something lame like that. I can't wait to read the next books!

This a wonderful book. Love it more when Evie had first met Sebastian in the rain.

This book was actually better than I expected. Perhaps it was just me, but I was hooked from the beginning, and it brought me through the more boring sections. Although the plot was highly predictable from the beginning, I still found myself reading until the end. All in all, you'll find me reading the sequel.

it wasn't the greatest book or the worst book. i didn't like how it jumped between the diary and the present.

"I'm. . .sorry" Evie stammered. "I didn't see you"
" You weren't supposed to" Sebastian
"Did you stop my horse on purpose?"Sebastian.
Did you ride into me on purpose?" Evie fumed back".
I caught my breath. He really was extraordinary, so pale and still and intense.
The boy moved closer to me and studied me with unnaturally bright eyes. I felt his cool breath on my cheek. Then he reached out and touched a strand of my wet hair and whispered, "How do you know what is waiting in this valley for a girl from the wil sea"
"Don't worry ; you'll get home safely tonight." He grinned and mounted his horse. " But we'll meet again, i promise you!"

Evie and Sebastian meet on the first time.

"If Sarah was right, I was being contacted by the spirit of a dead Victiorian girl who looked so much like me we could be mistaken for sisters. And she was warning me to stay away from Sebastian."
