Ricky's girlfriend, Charlene, has disappeared, and Ricky's mom wonders whether he's responsible. Despite reassurances from her husband, a police officer, Maggie is worried that Ricky's new black garb and tattoos signal a dangerous change of outlook. What's more, Charlene's disappearance echoes another case 20 years earlier, stirring community concerns. A parent's big nightmare, with standard cold-case parallels. Unger keeps building.

Dark thriller about a psychologist who upon returning back to her hometown discovers that a murder her best friends daughter has been abducted. She soon realizes that her husband (a detective) - who has been acting strangely - is tied in with another murder that occurred years before. Family secrets abound as well as love and loyalty. So,so book.

It started slow and bounced around a lot of characters which made it difficult to keep track of the various story lines. Once you got to know them your interest was piqued and it was hard to put down. In a small town USA a girl disappears and all involved know her directly or tangentially and the author slowly draws out each persons connection both to her and a similar disappearance and murder 2 decades ago. I would like to read more by this author. She revels in the psychology of the characters behaviour and you get pulled in nicely and deeply

Do not know why, but at the beginning this novel somehow reminded me of Twin Peaks.
In this book everyone, or nearly everyone, are fragile in their own way.
Excellently written. But there are so many names (in their majority women's), sometimes you feel confused - who is who.
The book is not only about the missing girls. This is a book about the conflict between generations, and about "suffering" of North-American teens today for being "so misunderstood". I'm asking: Why is there so much fuss about lonely and abused teenagers?" I guess because they have almost everything what they want relating to material things, and they don't have to survive on a minimum in everything, like many other people of the same age in other countries.

Fast-paced thriller/mystery about the disappearance of two girls in a tight-knit small town. The book explores how the past and present can intersect unexpectedly, as well as the importance of family and community.
