It's a conflicted time in Kurald Galain, the realm of Darkness, where Mother Dark reigns. But this ancient land was once home to many a power and even death is not quite eternal. The commoners' hero, Vatha Urusander, is being urged to take Mother Dark's hand in marriage, but her Consort, Lord Draconus, stands in the way of such ambitions.

This book is amazing!
So much detail and great character development. It's also a prequel so you can jump in right here without reading the rest of the series, (although I would recommend trying it out.)

If you're a fan of the plodding prose school of fantasy, this one's for you. Character voices also come off really flat too. Otherwise it feels a bit like Ian Irvine's later fantasy books, only without the rich world building and $Drama

The fans of Canadian fantasy writer Steve Erikson - this is for you. The first of a new trilogy. It's heavy reading but so worth it. It might be better appreciated by those who have read the Malazan series first which is likely why you are an Erikson fan to begin with.
