I really loved this story. I was drawn in from the very first chapter. It was so easy to visualize the characters; excellent writing, with great humour throughout. This book had me laughing and crying - very good read.

I'm no fan of chick lit, but I've seen such good reviews of Emily Giffin's books, I decided to give this one a try. As chick lit goes, it's smarter and less angst-ridden than many. There was a lot that didn't work for me in this book: Peter seems almost too good to be true, and Marian is nearly desperate to marry him, <spoiler>but a brief encounter with a former boyfriend she hasn't seen in 18 years, whom she dated only a few months to begin with and whose lifestyle is so far removed from hers that any sane person knows the chances of a successful long-term relationship between them is virtually impossible, quickly convinces her that she doesn't love Peter enough to tie the knot. Conrad is far too quick to integrate Kirby into his life</spoiler>. What I thought was spot on, however, was the uncertainty Marian and Kirby's parents felt about their roles in Kirby's life. There has to be lots of ambivalence for all concerned when an adopted child finds his or her birth parents, and those emotions Giffin captured perfectly.

Watch out for comment from omiebear20, spoiler alert!!

I think it is a realistic story with a realistic ending. Very worth the read. I really like this author and will check out more books by her.

don't like how Marian ends up with no one , but i enjoy how Kirby meets her biological parents in the end
