2013 BRAM STOKER AWARD NOMINEE FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL.
I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.
When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, she doesn't realize that paranormal forces are responsible--not until mysterious identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into her room and destroy a deadly spirit sent to kill her.
Kennedy learns that her mother's death was no accident, and now she has to take her place in the Legion of the Black Dove --a secret society formed to protect the world from a vengeful demon. A society left in the hands of a misfit group of teens with unique skills: Jared, combat trained, with a temper to match; Lukas, rogue hacker and code breaker; Alara, whose attitude is as powerful as her voodoo protections; and Priest, an engineer capable of making a weapon out of a soda can.
As the teens use their individual talents to battle paranormal entities, they earn their rightful places in the Legion--except for Kennedy, who is left wondering if she is truly one of them.
Can she stay alive long enough to find out--without losing her heart in the process?
Protect Yourself. What you can't see CAN hurt you.

The book had potential, and the second half admittedly improved, but it didn't really turn out. The relationship between her and her mother was oversimplified to her mother just baking brownies, and the "romance" started out of nowhere, flipflopped continuously, and never really made sense. The plot was never given a chance to fully develop its "creepiness" , so it's mostly just a jumble of scenes involving ghosts. Hopefully the second book is fleshed out more fully, because this one wasn't.

I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the sequel. I was relieved that the characters had suffered through tragedy and instead of being overcome with angst they were willing to act. The story was creepy, the characters were enjoyable, and I liked the romance, which took a backseat to the main story. However, based on the ending of Unbreakable, I suspect romance will be more central to book 2.

Not as creepy as I was hoping, though the scenes at the children's home and at the prison were fairly creeptastic. I felt like I was waiting for MORE. There were several plot holes, as well as some explanations that were pretty fuzzy. Things happened that weren't explained... I don't know if I'll read the next book or not. It sounds like maybe the action will step up a little.

Fans of Supernatural will love this book. I listened to it, and had trouble getting out of my car to press pause on the action. The characters are engaging and the action is non-stop. A creepy tale that will keep you up at night. I highly recommend!

I really enjoyed the story, there are definitely a lot of great creepy parts. But the one thing I could have done without was the romance... it got on my nerves because it didn't make sense. The ending leaves you wanting to come back for more to understand what is happening. There are still a lot of unanswered questions. A very good first book to a series though.
