Marcus, just out of college and reeling from a failed marriage, takes a teaching job in a tiny native community in northern Canada. While facing his own struggles, he also finds himself drawn into several tragic community events, including the suicide of an elderly priest and the death of two students from exposure. But when Marcus discovers the writings of controversial nineteenth-century missionary priest and linguist Emile Petitot, the writings have the potential to push him over the edge into madness, and he undertakes an obsessive search for answers in this novel that explores one man's search for the truth about all of us.
