The story line is so disturbing, I almost stopped reading it. I'm glad I didn't. Powning doesn't disappoint in her latest period novel. As always, her prose draw you into the heart of the story, leaving you feeling like you're there with the characters. Powerful, disturbing, poignant.

Beth Powning is a good author and I really enjoyed her book 'The Hatbox Letters.' But this book, although its well-written, deals with the persecution of the Puritains and Quakers in New England. I was hoping for more historical details--there are those, but the religious fervor overshadows that aspect.
