Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the worlds most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events.

This animated movie is the fictional story of a young aeronautical engineer in Japan between the wars: his life and love. The main story line, is his struggle to become an engineer and to excel in that profession. There are a few dream sequences in which he meets his hero: a pioneer Italian aeronautical engineer.
He falls in love and eventually marries a young woman that he had helped many years previously. The relationship is very tragic because she has a terminal illness.
There is also tragedy in that his creations are used to destroy instead of help the world.
