The four-part drama that tells the story of a seemingly placid New England town that is actually wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, all told through the lens of Olive, whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. The story spans 25 years and focuses on Olive's relationships with her husband, Henry, the good-hearted and kindly town pharmacist; their son, Christopher, who resents his mother's approach to parenting; and other members of their community.

Wonderful cast!
Great writing!
Complex.
Great humor.
Actors became their characters (except a few moments when humorous 'Bill Murryisms' popped through).

We were both sad it was only two DVD's but the story evolves as such to end as a package.
Don't miss this one.

Enjoy the blunt Olive in your eye, and the gravity, tragedy and joy of love, life, loss...

This may not be for everybody, but for fans of Frances McDormand, it is not to be missed.

If movie-watching equals escapism to you, you're not going to like this. A superb script, first-class acting, in no way predictable, it's a welcome change from the mindless dross that most movie-makers put in front of us. Sure it's depressing, certainly many of the characters aren't likeable, but it shows great insight into life and particularly into human relationships. One of its most appealing features is its refusal to manipulate situations for the sake of the story line. People come and go, some of them integral to the action, some not, and we get the feeling that the characters are only partly in charge of their own destiny, as in life. Just occasionally the drama sags, a feeling that editing could have been a little sharper, but over 240 minutes that happens rarely. Not for the first time we came to the conclusion the best movies these days are coming out of HBO.

Olive has to be one of the most disagreeable characters ever created! I didn't like the book either, but I thought I'd try the HBO series to see how the material was handled. It had been a few years since I'd read the book and seemed rather different from the novel. What was well-done, however, was the photography, and the acting. This was indeed a dismal and depressing story.

I notice all comments are positive, my opinion was , it is a depressing series. We watched the first series episode, Frances McDormand was a complete downer, dirty looks from her went right thru me. The acting was very good, subject matter not for me. If you watch and enjoy, more power to you, not a very uplifting show.

If you enjoy reading, I highly recommend reading the adult fiction book of the same title before watching this excellent miniseries. The book would have been very difficult to adapt, and Jane Anderson did a wonderful job. The performances by Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and others are fantastic. If you are prone to seasonal affective disorder, you may want to read and/or watch before winter sets in since Olive suffers from depression and the story can be bleak--but it is also beautiful.

Well done, showing you the spring, summer, fall and winter in a life time. Only that because of the age of leading actors, the spring one (Episode 1) is not that real.

It was hard for me to get into this story of a difficult woman and her impact on others - painful at first. Over time and the course of her life, I learned more about her and came to care for her with her strengths and shadows. I am glad I viewed the entire story - the ending is hopeful.

SPOILER ALERT:

Jack: Once they're gone, their
flaws disappear, don't they?
Olive: There were times that I
couldn't stand my Henry. But now he seems like the perfect man. I imagine our children will feel the same about us when we kick it.
Jack: That's not likely.

Olive: My son asked me to come down. His new wife is three months pregnant and apparently has the pukes, so...I'm on a mission of mercy.
===
Jack: Do you hear anything? Am I still alive?
Olive: Still banging on. It baffles me, this world. I don't want to leave it yet.

SPOILER ALERT:
Henry: Why are you so hateful, Olive?
Olive: Because you were too goddamn simple for me, Henry. I should have left you years ago.
Henry: Why the hell didn't you then?
Olive: I was going to, but he's dead.
Henry: Wouldn't have lasted two weeks with him. His drinking would've disgusted you.
Olive: And you wouldn't have lasted two weeks with your little mouse. She was half your age
and dumb as a rock.

===

Olive: Well, who am I to tell people what's best for them? Who the hell do I think I am?
