Mark Whitney was nearly killed by a dust storm on Mars and was abandoned by his crew who thought him dead. Now he's all alone with no way of letting Earth know he's alive, which doesn't matter because his supplies would run out before they'd get there. Either way, the environment or human error will likely kill him first. Not giving in, Mark works to survive, battling obstacle after obstacle, but will it be enough?

What a really good story. My son recommended I read (listen) to this book, telling me nothing about it, except I MUST read it. I am glad I took his advice.

I have not seen the movie and not sure after reading this book, that I would want. There are so many mental processes that occur with the main character, they would be difficult to portray them in the movie. My experience, the movie is never as good as the book.

This book is similar to "Apollo 13". An astronaut is abandoned on believing him to dead. But to the amassment of all, he is alive and the rest of book is about his survival and plans to resume him. From here on out, you are on a exciting and roller coaster ride. From the opening chapter, the suspense and excitement is in your face.

The story is well written, quite believable, witty, exciting, suspenseful, engaging. The main and all supporting characters are well developed, and people you will get to know quite well. All the characters are complementary to one another. No character is unnecessary, and contributes to the story. All told, the pool of characters makes for an immensely captivating story.

I promise you, if you take the time to read this book, you will certainly not be disappointed. And I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

R.C. Bray kills it performing this book. While I am not usually a fan of audiobooks, I absolutely loved this one and recommend it to others - if you're not sure if you like audiobooks or you usually don't like audiobooks, give this a try. Bray differentiates character voices well (even female characters, without sounding silly) and has excellent comedic timing. I started laughing at the first sentence.

One of those times when the book is better than the movie. So funny and so much more detail about what Mark goes through on Mars.

You've already read the plot summary, so no need to go into all that. What you want to know is whether this book is good enough to devote your time to read, right? I suggest you use the "5-Sided-Bolt Criteria" to decide. During the main character's trials and tribulations being stranded on Mars, he notices NASA has used an unusual 5 sided bolt on a piece of equipment he's using. He wonders why they'd do that, as such a bolt would require a corresponding and very expensive bespoke 5-sided wrench. If you yourself came across such a bolt, would you: (1) think is was very cool and wish you had one yourself?; (2) idly wonder why a 5-sided bolt instead of the normal 6 sided?; or (3) think NASA must know what they are doing, and have no further interest in it? If you choose (1), this book is definitely for you. (2) Maybe yes, maybe no. Read the first couple of chapters and decide. (3) Best to skip this one. Watch the movie instead. On the plus side, this is an interesting story and provides an opportunity to understand better the technology required for a human Martian trip. On the minus side, the plot is populated by caricatures rather than characters, and besides being riddled with numerous logical holes, becomes unnecessarily detailed and quite tedious in places. I almost threw up my hands and gave up at the 2/3 mark, but finally decided to stick with it until the end just to see what happens. Comme ci comme ça.

I'm glad I listened to the book on cd. I'd have gotten bogged down with the book. It's a little technical in a lot of spots. But I did enjoy it and wanted to keep listening to see what happened next.

After 3 discs I had to quit as the technical talk did little for me. Suppose I wanted some foreign bodies to appear?

Almost finished listening to the audiobook (it's on Youtube). There is a lot of "hard science", but the writing as well as the narrator makes it very entertaining. I am not a science nerd, but apparently the science he describes is accurate. (Maybe I have learned something through …osmosis?) I would highly recommend this audiobook.
