Not as good as Larsson.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one... being such a big fan of the original trilogy I think I had low expectations for another writer taking over Stieg's story - but Lagercrantz did ok staying close in style and subject. During the first half of the book I thought he stuck a little too close to themes of the 2nd and 3rd book but there was a very satisfying twist that made for an good tale that was very Lisbeth. Definitely not in the same class as the originals but enjoyable.

So glad to have another Lisbeth story. When a different author takes over a series, there is always the chance and one worries that the new stories won't live up to the original works. Not to worry. Lagercrantz has taken the characters and backstory created by Stieg Larsson and written a story just as good or, dare I say, even a bit better. The plot and character entanglements are satisfyingly complex and we are left with the promise of more stories in the future.

My only comment is that I felt like Lisbeth's character was just a little off-center of Larsson's portrayal of Lisbeth. This is a slightly (and only slightly) softer version of Lisbeth. And maybe that is intended as Lisbeth finds herself in a comfortable situation not having to worry about money or people chasing her and being able to do as she pleases. She's still a badass, but now a badass with a little more heart. I can't wait to read more about her.

Mikhael Blomkvist is at loose ends since Millennium has been sold to a corporation that regards him as "past his prime". As he toys with the idea of quitting his job, Lisbeth Salander suddenly reappears in his life. Blomkvist is summoned to visit a famous scientist in the middle of the night and arrives to find a scene of chaos and horror with only an autistic child still alive. The mystery begins...and yet more of Lisbeth's earlier life is revealed to the reader. The book ends with a cliffhanger...

This is a very good follow up to the Millennium Trilogy. Lagercrantz's story and characters are essentially true to the exciting legacy of Stieg Larsson.
