To be more accurate, this series should have been titled "Judd Travers", "Judd Season", and "Saving Judd", because this series was never really about a dog; it was about a boy's relationship with a troubled man. The problem is that there is not much left to tell in that narrative. Judd was "redeemed" in the last story, so this new story has little to tell. In this story Judd could be called "Saint Judd" for how good he is. To amend for lack of drama, Naylor throws in a verbally abusive father and his troubled daughters. This narrative is not boring, it just seems forced to add drama.
Some of the story is delightful, such as bits about Marty's family life, but most of it seems forced. There is just nothing left to tell about Marty/Judd so the whole book seems forced.
