Like so many foreign films it makes Hollywood seem so juvenile. Watch it! And don't judge.

This is a difficult film to watch.
There's the conflict of religion, the aftermath of war, and the internalized shame the sisters contain in order to fulfill their duties. There are scenes and dialog shared that is uncomfortable, so do proceed with caution. But the solidarity of these women as their situation permits is something to witness.

Totally not surprised this is based on true events. What a disturbing & tragic story.

A film much much more than what is in the description herein. You can watch the hour long extras or read the booklet that accompanies the DVD. I did both just to make sure I got them all. Amazing true human and God story among the ruins of man made wars. Best quote: Faith is twenty-four hours of doubt and one minute of hope.

Recommend this movie; it is very touching. Although one has to read all the dialogue it is well worth the time to watch.

this is a very deep, very moving, very involving movie based on the true life diaries of a doctor in WWII about the rape of a group of Polish nuns near the end of WWII and the consequences and aftermath. my husband and i were engrossed in it from start to finish and had us discussing the film during and after it finished. it is a very, very well done movie that we would recommend everyone to see. it is sad that it likely was never seen on the big screens as the impact would have been that much bigger but it came out around june-november 2016 when a lot of the block buster movies from hollywood were out and this little movie would not have had a chance against them. again, I would urge everyone TO SEE THIS GEM OF A FILM!!!

This film was stunning. The acting was top notch, and the overall portrayal of such a delicate and horrible story was heart-wrenching. Highly recommended.

Very good movie based on a convent in Poland during the second world war. French Red Cross doctor is called to the convent to assist in the birthing of one of the nuns. Soon, it is discovered that German and Russian troops had taken the convent before the end of the war. The French doctor manages to come up with a very creative solution to the pregnancies . The film is well done, examining not only the casualties of war, but religious and moral issues as well. Subtitles are well done. An original WWII story.

Historically, American films with nuns, constrained by the Hays Code, were simplistic yet enjoyable stories of holy women doing good works for people. More modern films like “Doubt,” “La Religieuse,” and “Ida” include more three dimensional characters and three dimensional themes. “The Innocents,” completely original, is of the utmost modern vintage. I suspect that the plot is a composite of actual events that occurred in the aftermath of WWII. I will not spoil the film by saying more. If you want a realistic portrait of nuns living in a dangerous environment, see this film.

On faith:
I can no longer reconcile my faith with these terrible events. God, of whom I still consider myself to be the divine bride, nonetheless wanted this.
-Wanted it?
If it happened, that means He wanted it.
-We cannot know what God wants. The only truth is His love.
But none have lost their faith?
-You know, faith... At first, you're like a child holding your father's hand, feeling safe.
Then a time comes — and I think it always comes — when your father lets go. You're lost, alone in the dark. You cry out, but no one answers. Even if you prepare for it, you're caught unawares. It hits you right in the heart. That's the cross we bear.
I have many flaws. I deserve the harshest penance. I've never had much faith. And since this happened, I've lost the little I had.
I was stylish then. I liked men and men liked me.
-Don't you ever regret it?
Faith is twenty-four hours of doubt and one minute of hope.

A letter from a true friend:
Dear Mathilde,
The dark clouds have moved on. The sun shines brightly in our sky. And you are in our hearts. Perhaps other wars will come. Other dangers threaten us. It will soon be harder to write to each other. But whatever fate awaits us, I feel ready to face it. I know, even if it makes you laugh, that God sent you. May He accompany you in your trials and may you always be joyful.
When I joined the Red Cross team, I was still a student. I ended up carrying stretchers under fire when Paris was liberated. Sorry, but I pissed myself more than once. But I've never regretted it. And I imagined I would save lives.
