Officially now one of my favorite books. Akos and Cyra's dynamic relationship really pulls you in. The antagonists in the book really move the plot along and give the protagonists more depth. The plot is also so original and extremely well thought out. Looks like Veronica Roth has a new bestseller on her hands!

An incredibly slow novel with a very uninteresting plot. I can't seem to get myself to read more than a few pages at a time. The world-building is the only admirable aspect of the book, but otherwise, don't waste your time. I'm more than halfway through the book and I still can't figure out what the conflict is. The majority of the book is told through Cyra's point of view and it's so dull; Cyra's voice is just monotone, with no discernable personality. Seriously, pick up any other book.

Veronica Roth returns (from the Divergent series) with a thrilling sci-fi novel that keeps the reader engaged in suspense. The author creates many worlds with different elemental habitats and characters that are all very unique in their own way.
Although this book started off too slow and sometimes dragged on the plot, overall I still really enjoyed the novel. There is a lot of controversy on this novel about racism, but I think that the author was trying to create a more exciting book by making the characters very different from each other, such as having contrasted beliefs and religion.
I would definitely recommend this novel!

Like in her first series, Divergent, Roth focuses on breaking harmful cycles, courage, and healing. I love how the relationship between Akos and Cyra develops over time into a deep friendship (no love-at-first-sight going on here!) and I love how ultimately there is hope for these two who have experienced so much pain. My only wish is for more action to keep the plot moving a little more quickly.

This book was extremely enjoyable! For fans of double perspective writing, sci-fi/fantasy, and strong characters; Carve the Mark is for you! It starts a little slow, but I personally love Akos, so I was not really bothered by the beginning. It isn't super fast paced until the last three quarters of the book. There are romantic elements to the book as well, and I personally love the subtle way it's inserted throughout the book.

Be warned if you don't like very intense or bloody scenes, there are some in the book. Not a ton, but with a culture where there are warring peoples there is bound to be some gruesome deaths as well as torturing. These scenes aren't always described explicitly, but there are a couple that are.

I personally recommend that older teens read this book, due to language, romantic elements, and violence/death/torture. (16 and up!)

The plot was slow to get going. I found it overly long and not as action-packed as the Divergent series. A bit more world-building is needed to help readers immerse themselves in the story. The characters were what kept me interested and I will probably check out book two.

I love this book. I also enjoy writing, and I think this book really captures something I find extremely important: friendship, love, and loyalty.

Great imagination and SUPERB character development. I already can't wait for the second book. Love a book that relaxes the mind with a wonderful and mystical story.
I impatiently await the sequel to this well written, detailed, pain and sacrifice, that makes you ponder things like what really is right or wrong?

This book caused me a lot of emotional collateral damage. It is written perfectly with the perfect amount of detail, which made it a slightly more advanced read. I would recommend an age of over 15 at least, to fully understand the concepts. For example, everyone knows pain differently. At least, people think they do. Some like causing it, some think they feel it excessively, and others get mixed up between physical, verbal, and psychological pain. With that, everyone has their own way of dealing with it and how to help others cope. This book explored the story of a girl who was raised to use her power of pain, and a boy who had to learn to deal with it when it was suddenly thrust into his life. When their lives collide, as predicted by the fates, explosions will be set off that will leave no one unchanged. I can't wait for another one of this author's books! 5/5 Stars
