When the body of George Leigh-Mallory was discovered high up on the slopes of Everest in 1999, seventy-five years after he had gone missing, few considered his climbing partner Sandy Irvine. Mallory was the experienced climber, on his third Everest visit. Irvine was only twenty-two & on his first. As well as his physical prowess - he was a noted oarsman & a Blue at Oxford - it was his natural affinity with the worlds of science & machinery that also told with the Everest Committee who selected him for the ill-fated 1924 expedition. Did Irvine & Mallory gain the summit, but perish on the way down the mountain? A new expedition is searching for Ivine's body this year & hopes at last to find the answers.
