I recently read Sams newest book, First Snow in the Woods and thought it to be an amazing combination of prose and photography. Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the same quality.

The prose is stilting--doesn't flow well--and the photography quality is lacking. In many places it looks very much like pieces were pasted in. The blending is poor. In other photos, the light and shadow is not well done.

It's a cute concept to use a snowman covered in nuts and seeds to feed the animals, but this book did not deliver on quality as I hoped it would.

The birds are the first to notice that a stranger was in the woods. Daybreak was coming and the deer were walking through the quiet and snow when they heard about the stranger from a bluejay. Soon all the animals were looking for the stranger. The owl, the mourning doves, the chickadees, the cardinal all flew around and looked to see who-hoo was in the woods! And then reported back to the deer, the beaver, the porcupine among others. Soon everyone found the intruder and a special surprise. The story is accompanied by beautiful photographs that reflect the quiet beauty of a winter day in the woods.
