At the Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, the 18th century comes alive! Here are the sights, sounds and sensations of life in a French military town in the year 1744.

Travel through time with author and historian Susan Biagi as she relates the fascinating story of Louisbourg's birth, growth and eventual destruction. Her vivid descriptions of people, culture, fashions, food and politics provide a rich context for Louisbourg's battle for supremacy in the New World. In these pages you'll also find full-colour photographs of the site and its characters; a description of the ambitious restoration process that made Louisbourg one of the world's greatest outdoor museums; and a guide to nature walks and activities in the area around the fortress.

Louisbourg is both a compelling history and a comprehensive guide to the unique and powerful experience of Louisbourg. The text includes a detailed map and handsome photographs on every page.

Useful map and information on the Fortress Louisbourg. The map identifies the houses in the reconstructed area and helped me to plan where the buildings were that I wanted to visit. The many colored pictures of actual rooms in these buildings and the different building construction methods added interest to reading about the various buildings. The narrative provides background information to the building of the fortress and life of its townspeople. The map showing the layout of the reconstructed fortress is the same one received at the entrance to this tourist attraction. If going to the Maritimes, do make an effort to visit Fortress Louisbourg.
