The main actor, Peter O'Toole, hardly speaks a word during the first hour of this 3 hour epic as he grapples with the psychological impact of being cast out of the merchant marine for alleged dereliction of duty. Fortunately, 'Jim' is able to demonstrate his resourcefulness, leadership, and bravery when he helps Indonesian natives to overthrow an oppressive warlord. But when the bad guys return to recover their loot, villagers die so 'Jim' must pay the price (according to the Victorian rules of the Great Game). To make matters worse, Hollywood adds a love interest to complicate Jim's life - and death.
