I have read all the "in Death" books by JD Robb. In fact I am in the process of reading them all again. And I read them for the interactions, and relationships between the characters as well. This is the first book in the series that I did not like. In fact I didn't even finish reading it. It seemed like she was just going through the motions while writing it. I had to wonder if she hasn't gotten burnt out, at least with this series. You knew who the villain was from the beginning. And there was almost no backstory, or interplay between the characters. The book consisted of a description of each consecutive torture and murder in detail, and that was about it. I have always eagerly awaited her next book, but after this offering, I am not sure if it isn't time for her to wrap up the "in Death" series. Anybody could have written this book. It just wasn't very good.
