Stunning! Once again a fantastical world is opened up to us as The Journey continues in The Quest. Starting off from where the first book left us, we see the little girl with the magical red crayon and her friend, the little boy with the purple crayon, witnessing the kidnapping of a king. They spring into action, following a map that leads them through castles, underwater ruins, jungles and more. Once again the artist takes our breaths away with the breadth of places he portrays. Each one explored is filled with an incredible amount of creativity, detail, and colour. Without words to express the story it is solely up to the illustrations, and they do it perfectly. The various hues in particular serve the important function of creating atmosphere; purple lighting in the underwater ruins gives a sense of wonder, while the gradually mounting greys create an ominous tone as the children's pursuers get closer. A dash of colour ruins their schemes though, when a rainbow sweeps away the gloom. By using their magic crayons and imaginations, the young girl and boy once again have their happy ending.
