A great introduction to Michael Connelly and his hardboiled, truth-seeking, rule-breaking detective, Harry Bosch. Bosch is a member of Hollywood's crime unit but gets called in to Los Angeles to investigate the murder of a lawyer who makes his living suing the LAPD for discrimination and brutality. Not only is Bosch potentially hunting one of his own, but he's partnered with his rival from Internal Affairs division, there to handle what is a politically and racially charged case. On top of this, Bosch's wife has disappeared and may have relapsed into a black hole of gambling addiction. Bosch hunts for the killer through the twisted, corrupt LA political scene, and Connelly - himself a former journalist and with a journalist's eye for detail and character - piles on the surprises and memorable characters. Readers will not be disappointed.
