In 1777, Lt. Bolitho is stationed on ship of the line Trojan. At 21, he is a fourth lieutenant and the British are in the middle of a war with the United States. While the British aren’t doing well in the fight, Bolitho does manage to distinguish himself in battle. This book has a bit more action on land than the previous stories in the series. The story touches a bit more on the less heroic members of the ship officers and the consequences of this for both the seamen and the other officers. The rapid rise of an officer through the ranks or the stagnation of his career is detailed and the trouble with American privateers from a British point of view is a big part of the book. I enjoyed it and Bolitho remains one of my favorite naval heroes.
