Makes almost every greatest sports movie list, but is good enough to transcend its genre. Why? For one thing, Slap Shot was written by a woman. That's why we see the struggles of the players' girlfriends--from their points of view. We also see that the team owner is a woman--a wealthy, disinterested woman to whom the players are nothing more than fresh meat for her to unload before the expiration date. Also of note is the blue collar spirit of the film-- the small Rust Belt cities and their people, as well as art direction that undoubtedly seemed like nbd in 1977 but looks fantastic forty years later. My favorite line: "I'm trying to listen to the f*****g song!"
