Dr. Kagan illustrates that democracy is not an inevitable social evolutionary state. Rather, it is a relative accident of circumstance; something truly special and fragile. It is subject to both outside threats and threats from within. The war with Sparta was a devastating war of superpowers and proxies. There are striking resemblances to the events of the 20th century. This is an extremely well researched and well written book.
